![]() 2009: BEET Celebrates its 30th Anniversary with two New CoursesNext year BEET celebrates thirty years of success. The school began on October 1st 1979 with just three students in the front room of number 17 Chatsworth Road, Bournemouth. The teacher was Clive Barrow, and No 17 was where he lived. Now, thirty years later, he finds that the seed he planted then has grown into one of the UK’s leading language schools and teacher training centres.BEET changed its logo earlier this year to include a leaf, the source of energy and life that enables all things to grow and thrive. To celebrate, BEET is introducing two new courses for 2009: Cambridge First Certificate and Advanced English Summer Courses: These new courses run from July 6 to August 28, starting any Monday. The courses are most suitable for students planning to sit the exam in December in their own country. However, it may be possible also to sit these exams at the end of August, subject to confirmation by Cambridge ESOL. Cambridge are planning to launch the new summer exam dates in the UK and Ireland only during 2009. Full-time IELTS Preparation Courses: We are starting a new full-time course on January 5th, 2009. This follows very popular demand. We have been running the course in 2008 so successfully that it is now part of our regular programme. ![]() 2009: New courses in Drama, Journalism and making DVDsDVD CourseWe run two-week afternoon courses, four days a week, for closed groups of students in which the students get practical experience in making and editing videos. Each lesson focuses on a particular area of production skills such as storyboarding, dialogue, lip-synching with songs and aims for students to acquire these skills through English. Each lesson also has language input of relevant technical vocabulary and phrases needed for the sorts of interpersonal communication that the tasks require. Drama Course We run two-week afternoon courses, four days a week, for closed groups of students in which the students get practical experience in staging a musical. During the last two summers the musical focussed on has been "Grease" and groups of 10 – 15 students have successfully staged a twenty-minute version of the musical. Lessons focus on choreography, pronunciation of song lyrics, acting, and related language input areas. The courses are overseen by TEFL-trained drama teachers who have an awareness of both the students' linguistic needs and production issues. Journalism Course We run two-week journalism courses for closed groups of students which aim to give students practical experience of producing a class newspaper in English, incorporating many of the typical features of an English-language newspaper. Each lesson will focus on different sections of papers and students should learn about headlines, lead stories, interviews, reviews, comment / editorial sections, sports writing, gossip and "in brief" columns. Each lesson will include the chance to analyse the relevant sections in current publications, appropriate language input, project work (creating their own examples) and presentation to other groups. ![]() Quality English has had a busy few days at ICEF BerlinQE school representatives at ICEF congregated in the sunny Garten Lounge on Sunday 2nd November. Thirty guests enjoyed their first day in Berlin by sharing an informal lunch together, getting in the mood for the workshop. Feedback has been positive and we shall invite schools again next year. The Library has been booked already and this will give us more privacy - with no need to fend off inquisitive agents. There were twenty QE schools at the workshop. Their tables were scattered around the halls and there were plenty of reports of agents seeking them out because they were 'QE'. The QE stand was a busy and interesting place to be. Not only were there plenty of agents requesting the new brochure and more information about the schools, but also schools came along and enquired about becoming 'a QE school'. The stand was also a springboard for visiting the school tables, making sure they had brochures and passing on leads when they came up. Date Added: November 6 2008 |
